At last, Spring is here. Undoubtedly, the weather will fluctuate over these next two months, but the days are getting longer, the flowers are beginning to bloom, and the buds are forming on the trees!
The Cuyahoga SWCD cannot say enough about the benefits of health soil--for the animals that live in the soil and the plants that grown in it. Healthy soil will help your plants thrive. Check out the soils health information at www.nrcs.usda.gov.
Arbor Week will be celebrated in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County during the last week of April. Arbor Day was initiated in Nebraska by J. Sterling Morton, a lover of nature and a journalist who spread his enthusiasm for the value of trees. Visit www.arborday.org for more historical information about the success of the first Arbor Day. Today the most common date to celebrate Arbor Day is the last Friday in April. In Ohio, like Nebraska, April is a fantastic month to plant trees because the weather is cooler and April showers help the trees get off to a great start.
The Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District has always supported tree plantings, with a strong emphasis on plantings in riparian (stream) corridors. As a member of the Cleveland Tree Coalition, the Cuyahoga SWCD is participating in the goal to increase tree canopy coverage in Cleveland and the County. Some of that work will be done through the Public Involvement and Public Education programs, because trees are beneficial to reducing the impacts from stormwater. The SWCD’s Urban Agriculture Program is also working to provide urban reforestation opportunities.
If you are interested in learning more about trees, planting, pruning and care techniques, check out the Tree Huggers 101 workshops on May 2, May 10 and May 12. Register at www.cuyahogaswcd.org. Not only will you get solid tips about trees, the workshop fee covers the costs of a sizable tree and watering donut for all participants.
So as Arbor Day approaches, consider planting on tree on your property or volunteering for one of the many tree planting activities. The Cuyahoga SWCD website calendar lists opportunities and other opportunities will be posted on the Cuyahoga SWCD Facebook site. Other sites that will list Arbor Day activities include: http://www.sustainablecleveland.org/events?page=2 and
