Have you ever wondered how the health of an entire stream is measured? Do you know where the headwaters of Euclid Creek are located? Are you curious about what sort of organisms live in Euclid Creek? These are just the kinds of questions to which you can get answers at “Day in the Life of Euclid Creek”, a snapshot day of Euclid Creek and a collaborative effort between Cleveland Metroparks, Friends of Euclid Creek, NEORSD, Sierra Club, and City of Cleveland – Division of Water.
The inaugural “Day in the Life of Euclid Creek” took place on an unusually chilly October day in 2014. Despite the cold, we had a great group of participants (including the National Honors Society from Mayfield High School) who came out to learn how we monitor water quality through water chemistry sampling, macroinvertebrate monitoring, and electrofishing. Participants and volunteers helped us take a “snapshot” of the creek's health from the headwaters at Acacia Reservation to the mouth at Wildwood Park.
“Day in the Life of Euclid Creek” was held again under beautiful, blue skies on July 18th, 2015. We collected 12 water quality samples using 3 different methods across 9 different sites. Metroparks staff members were able to demonstrate techniques used to assess fish and macroinvertebrate communities. As part of Secchi Disk Day, we collected data on turbidity at all three main event sites (Acacia Reservation, and Highland Picnic Area and Wildwood Park, Euclid Creek Reservation). Check out the ‘Outcome Tab’ above to see 2014 and 2015 results.
Thanks to all who attended and made the day a great success! Congrats to those of you who went home with raffle prizes. Good luck to everyone in the Clean Water Tour & Sweepstakes! See the Sustainable Cleveland webpage to see other ways to be a part of the Year of Clean Water.
