So much to celebrate!

Spring has just begun and it’s a welcome time for many. As students return to the classroom, Cuyahoga SWCD has many exciting possibilities for school and extracurricular youth programs. Deadlines are fast approaching for our K-12 poster contest registration (April 1st) and the Camp Canopy scholarship application deadline (April 9th). The 2021 poster contest theme is Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities. Camp Canopy is a great place for high school students to learn more about forestry and wildlife careers while interacting with natural resource professionals and enjoying traditional camp activities like paddling and climbing.

Perhaps our most unique education superpowers are our ability to bring our programs to schools and to conduct hands on learning opportunities in outdoor settings. We still have some openings for 3rd Grade teachers to schedule Project Plant It programs – we ordered some extra tree seedlings and native wildflower seeds to give to the students. As part of this program, we can do an Earth Day or Arbor Day program (late April or early May) for your students – outdoor, tree themed scavenger hunts are always a great hit. Hurry to schedule a program while supplies last.

Youth group leaders can request opportunities for service projects such as storm drain stenciling, stream cleanups and native plant installations (trees and gardens) in their communities. We partner with most of the communities in Cuyahoga County and we can work with your community to find a good opportunity.

Our Native Urban Tree Starters (NUTS) program is available for both school and youth groups. This program allows young people to take an active role in restoring the tree canopy in Cuyahoga County. Presentations on the topics of soils, stormwater management and native plantings are available for all ages.

Wet or dry, I plan on getting outside and enjoying the fresh spring air. I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new people. Please consider including our programs in your plans for spring!
